PHS Connection to “Lest We Forget”

In honor of Pearl Harbor Day, Pleasanton students (grades 7,8,10 and 11) connected to the “Lest We Forget” panel discussion with World War II veterans. The panel discussion originated from a regional education agency in Michigan. The veterans discussed their own experiences in World War II, one from the Pacific Theater fighting Japan, and two representing the European Theater, fighting Nazi Germany. The live interactive conference allowed students from Pleasanton to ask questions directly to the veterans.

Topics in the discussion related to each veteran’s story regarding the war while other topics ranged from their view of how war decisions are made to the process of coming home and adjusting to a normal life.

This video clips is captures the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day:

Thank you for taking time to teach us about your experiences in World War 2. I really enjoyed listening to you guys. My Great-Grandpa was a pilot in the war. He had a heart attack shortly after his return from the war and died. So I have always been interested in World War 2 because of that. I don’t know much about him and I’m glad I could listen to you guys and picture what it would have been like for him in the war. Thanks.

I never got to hear any of his stories because he died of a heart attack before I was born. I thank you because now I know of some of the things he went through. Thank you.

i am very thankful for the time we got to learn about the lives of the veterans. After the war they had many different feelings. Some were sad and some were joyful and also a lot of people were in a state of shock. The best part is that the ones that are still alive today are still willing to do it again. Thank you for your time!!!

I’m glad you and others survived to tell us about your past and that we may carry it on as a memory of how this world came to be. My father was in the Vietnam War when he was only 17 and I have heard stories about the War and how cruel it could be. I can understand making friends in the War is important but loosing them is even worse. Everyday I’m thankful that people who have survived and who haven’t t fight for our country. Thank you for telling us about the past and I hope to learn more.

Thank you for helping keeping our country free. There is an old man that goes to my church, who was at Pearl Harbor. He said that there were six suicide submarines that were floating around the harbor. The old man was actually on a boat when he heard about the attack. One of the submarines had actually started to come to the surface by his boat. The boat he was on had a gun on it. So they shot a hole in the submarine and it sunk. One down five to go. But, two of the submarines had actually gotten to shore and the pilots were captured. The other three subs had disappeared the Japanese don’t even know what happen to the subs. So anyways thank you for all you service.
