Fifth and Sixth Grades Connect To Omaha’s Lied Jungle
On Wednesday, January 18th, Pleasanton fifth and sixth graders connected live to the Henry Doorly Zoo’s Rain Forest. The live interactive discussion highlighted the animals and plant life of a typical rain forest. Students were introduced to “Skittles”, the zoo’s McCaw Ambassador. Henry Doorly Zoo has identified a variety of animals that are capable of being held by a zoo keeper, and introduced to an audience.
Pleasanton students learned about the habitat of Skittles, as well as several other species living in the Rain Forest. Some of the animals shown and discussed with the students were the Howler Monkey, the Three Toed and Two Toed Sloth, the Sokie Monkey, and Indian Fruit Bat. Students also learned about the research being conducted between Madagascar and the zoo.

There are 4 floors in the rain forest. The bottom floor is rain forest floor. The second floor is the understory. The third floor is the canopy. The forth floor is emergent.

i learned about a Macaw named Skittles.His beak is hard enough to break the hardest nut even your own finger.I also learned about a monkey named the howler monkey they only howl in the morning.I learned about a sloth that only weighed about 15 lbs.But he looked about 35 lbs because of all his hair .The sloth sleeps 20 hours a day. In the zoo they have two white tigers named Kitra and Pason.They also have a white albino hedgehog.They also have a white alligator but it is not albino.
I have learned alot scarlet micaws can live up to 80 years.Howler monkeys are the same but the male is black and the feamals are brown.Scarlet macaws beak are so powerful that it can break your finger.Howler monkeys howl in the morning.Slothes sleep on a tree for twenty hours a day.The Heanry Dorly Zoo is trying to save the rain forest.The Henry Dorly Zoo is also helping to save Madagascar.
i learned that a sloth sleepes 20 hours of the day. Also they move very slow. In Madagascar they have plants their that is only located at Madagascar. they are also improving the zoo. They are teaching people in Madagascar to cook their food without using wood. they found over 20 more speacies of Lemers. They have a sloth that can excape from his exhibit. They are going to get a Elephant when they upgrade the zoo.
I leaned that howler monkeys howl when they get up in the morning. There was a sloth that sleeps 20 hours a day. He came down once a week to go to the bathroom. Male monkeys are black and female monkeys are brown. Skittles is going to be 2 next spring. A scarlet macaws can live up to 80 years. They are going to move the African exhibit to the front.

I learned about a a macaw named skittles he has a beak so hard that it could break a persons finger. We also learned about a sloth and how he sleeps almost 20 hours a day. The sloth only comes down once a week. It also starts to grow algae on its back. The zoo also has 2 lions named Kitra and Pason. They also have a white alligator that has dark eyes. They also have a white bird that has red eyes.

I learned that there are 750 species of animals and 15,000 animals in the zoo. I also learned about a kind of bird called a Macaw. The birds name was Skittles. Macaws are very colerful birds.The Macaws are so colorful cause they fell safe in high grounds but if they lived on the ground they would be less colorful. The Macaw’s have a beak that is hard. The beak’s were so hard that they us them to crack a nut for food. The Sloth was one of the animals we also learned about. We learned that the Sloth moves very slowly and they only come out of the tree one’s a week to go to the bathroom. The Sloth sleep’s 20 hours a day. The Sloth dos not need water unless it is a very dry day. Why the Sloth dos not need water is it gets water from it’s foods.
I learned a lot about the rain forest. The four layers of the jungle the floor, the understory, the canopy and the emergent layer. The zoo also has 15,000 animals. 760 species!!! Skittle is two years old. His beak is strong enough to crack some of the hardest nuts. Some birds nest in nests that look like a purse!! Sloths only come down once a week to go to the bathroom. For safety reasons. They also sleep 20 hours a day!! A predator of the sloth is an owl or other large birds.

I liked learning about the Omaha Zoo because now i know what is at the zoo.We learned about a colorful bird called skittles. Skittles is a macaw. Skittles only eats nuts,fruit and grain every day. Skittles will be turning 2 years old in spring. They say that is still a baby because they live up to 80 years old. We learned about the howler monkeys. They howled to each other in the morning to see where they were. They were very social. There is 4 layers of the forest. The 1 one is the ground. The 2 one is the understory. The 3 was the canopy. The 4 is the emergent layer.

I learned a lot .I learned about a lot of stuff from the people who talked to us. We learned that the zoo has 15,000 animals in the zoo.There is 760 types of animals.I also learned 80% of Madagascar is cut down.There are howler monkeys and many more . There are 4 layers of the rainforest the floor,the understory, the canopy, and the emergent layer . The scarlet macaw named skittles we met only stays in the canopy and the emergent layer.The sloth only comes down once a week to go to the bathroom.Like i was saying about skittles was that he/she may live for 80 years and right now he/she can only say hi they say he/she will be able to say a lot more in a couple years.Why i say he/she is because they do not know if he/she is a boy or a girl.
